COMMISSION A PIECE
Commissioning is when you hire a living composer to create a piece of music custom-made especially for you and your ensemble or group. Often composers are commissioned to write a piece of music for occasions such as a concert, festival, anniversary or other commemorative event. Any group or individual can commission a composer and it is a unique and meaningful way to honor your occasion. The audience will experience your group performing a world premiere and the score will always carry the dedication, “Commissioned by (you) for (your event)”.
When you work with a composer, you are a part of the compositional process from the beginning stages. Commissioning a piece of music is not only about having the piece performed, it is also about your experience throughout the entire creation process. Getting to know who you are and what is important to you as well as your technical capabilities is a composer's starting point. As the piece progresses into rehearsal, composers are often accessible for questions and will set up times to visit your rehearsals either in person or remotely. Often, composers will attend your premiere of the piece. Through this unique and rich process, you and your performers will develop an intimate understanding and a deep commitment to the piece which will shine through in your performance.
Engaging a composer and exploring possibilities through the commissioning process is exciting and results in a meaningful outcome!
